Chosen Before Creation

Ephesians 1:3–4 · Romans 8:29–303 min readDavies K. Bamigboye

When did God decide to bless you? Most of us would point to a moment in our own story — the day we got saved, the day we started giving faithfully, the day we got serious about our walk with Him.

Paul’s answer is not inside your story at all. It is not even inside human history. The blessing over your life was decided before there was a universe for you to be born into. And a decision made before creation cannot be a reaction to anything you have or haven’t done since.

The blessing named

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

Ephesians 1:3 · KJV

The same root appears three times in one verse: eulogētos (blessed be God), eulogēsas (who has blessed us) and eulogia (blessing). That density tells you to pay attention.

Eulogia is the word the Greek Old Testament uses for the Hebrew barak — the blessing over Adam and Eve (Genesis 1:28), over Noah (Genesis 9:1) and promised to Abram (Genesis 12:2–3). Paul is not coining a new idea. He is picking up the word that has run through Scripture since the first blessing was spoken, and applying it to you in full. Not some. All. Already given, in Christ.

The blessing timed

According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

Ephesians 1:4 · KJV

In the Greek there is no full stop between verses 3 and 4. The blessing and the choosing are one thought. And “before the foundation of the world” — pro katabolēs kosmou, before the laying-down of the world’s foundation — does not mean “a long time ago.” It means before Genesis 1:1, before light, before time.

We usually assume the sequence runs: God creates, people turn out well, and then God blesses what pleases Him. Ephesians 1:4 destroys that sequence. The choosing happened before there was an Adam, before there was anything to be pleased with or disappointed in. There was no track record to consult.

So Genesis 1:28 was never God improvising generosity in the moment. It was God carrying out in time a decision already made outside of time. Creation was not the origin of the blessing. It was the first place it got spoken out loud.

Paul says the same in Romans 8:29–30: foreknown, predestined, called, justified, glorified — a chain that starts before you entered the story. And Jude addresses believers as those “kept and guarded for Jesus” (Jude 1:1). That guarding did not start the day you were born. It started before the foundation of the world.

Chosen

Ephesians 1:4

“Before anything existed”

Decided before there was a world, a calendar or a version of you that could earn or forfeit anything.

For holiness

the purpose

“Fruit, not fee”

Not chosen because you were already holy — chosen so that you would become holy. The purpose follows the choice.

In love

the posture

“Delight, not tolerance”

Like a father over a newborn: joy, not because you finally proved yourself, but because a choice made before time came to pass.

Why this matters for your week

Every excuse you have made for feeling unqualified — “God can’t be pleased with me after last month,” “I need to get my life together first” — assumes a timeline Ephesians 1:4 does not permit. Nothing you would ever do was factored into a decision made before you existed.

You are not blessed because of how last Tuesday went. You are blessed because of a decision made before there was a Tuesday.

This does not erase how you live. You were chosen for holiness, and that purpose matters deeply. But the order matters just as much: holiness is the fruit of being chosen, not the price of it. Most performance-driven living is a person trying to influence a decision that was settled before they were born. That is not humility. It is a misunderstanding of the timeline.

This confronts imposter syndrome at the root — the quiet fear that you don’t belong in the room, the calling, the marriage or the assignment, and that someone will soon find out. If God chose you before the foundation of the world, your qualification was never based on a performance record. You cannot be exposed as unqualified for a position you were never given on qualifications in the first place.

Live from the choosing. Do not live toward it.
